Caldecott closure + power outage
Now, I know we’re all not here for the breaking news, but a friend of mine just texted me this article from the Chronicle that came out at 6:02 p.m. and if you live in the East Bay this will definitely wreck your Wednesday:
Caltrans plans to fully close the Caldecott Tunnel:
All four bores of the tunnel running on Highway 24 will be closed due to the outage. The tunnels cannot operate without power, Caltrans said. “The tunnel closures can begin as soon as this evening and continue for as long as five days,” officials said.
That’s kind of a big deal. And I certainly didn’t get a govt issued SMS PSA about it, so I assume you didn’t either. While shutting down the tunnels seems crazy in its own right, one thing to keep in mind is that over 260,000 vehicles cross the Bay Bridge daily (and you can guess many more passengers ride in those cars). So will all of those people be riding BART tomorrow? Is BART prepared for a half million extra riders tomorrow? Guess we will all wait and see.
Oh yeah, and ICYMI your power is probably shutting off at midnight too.
And in case you really missed it - this is all happening because PG&E is trying to prevent another horrific and hellish fire season.
Again - I’m not a real news outlet - so please check PG&E/Caltrans/The Chronicle for the latest.
Good night, and good luck.
