Quick hit: weekend fodder
It’s Friday, which means its time to start thinking about what you can talk about other than work. Here is some east bay dinner party fodder to help make you feel interesting:
A tiny part of Alameda is actually owned by San Francisco. My east bay native friend Sean tipped me off to this one. Listen to or read this KQED story on how a piece of the island became a piece of the city - the story dates back to the time when California was part of Spain.
Zendaya - who you may know as a singer, or a Disney channel kid, or as the drug-addicted protagonist of HBO’s surreal/disturbing teen drama *Euphoria* was born in Oakland and got her start at the Cal Shakes theater in Orinda. If you haven’t seen a Shakespearean production at this outdoor theater you can check out House of Joy through September, and Macbeth starting later this fall. More here.
The acclaimed podcast Death, Sex and Money, which unsurprisingly is about the aforementioned topics and features celebrity guests and stories of everyday Americans, is recorded in the east bay in Emeryville. Here’s an Oakland-centric episode called “Envy is a hell of a drug” featuring Berkeley native Rafael Casal interviewed by guest host Hayward-born, Moraga-educated, Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali.
